Commanding General Petraeus was on the Hill Monday reporting about the progress in Iraq. (Or lack there of.) Tuesday was 9/11. It was all an interesting confluence of events. I have started a class in my masters program about the theory of homeland security. I thought the class was going to be about the nuts and bolts of DHS, but it is more philosophy than org charts - very good.
So there I was on the first day of class on the 10th of September learning about how the United States has been attacked by foreign governments, individuals etc. numerous times before. Remember the War of 1812 - pesky British. Pearl Harbor, Puerto Ricans in the Capitol? 9/11 was nothing new, I mean it was bad and on a large scale, but every generation has feared something. Duck and cover drills for fear of Russian nuclear attacks... see what I mean.
So why did we rush to create the Department of Homeland Security? I'm not asserting that everyone doesn't need to work together, but is another government entity the answer.
Sheesh, I'm starting to sound like a Republican.
